Simply go somewhere calm; a place you feel relaxed and at peace with yourself. Start by going into nature and observe what you feel, hear, see, and smell.
Put your electronics away to prevent excess energy depressing the body.
Instead of trying to not think about anything, try completing every thought coming across your mind and capitalize it with positive affirmations.
Meditation is a reflection of yourself. There is no “correct” way of doing it unless you do not experience gluing another piece to the your puzzle.
